Description

Despite significantly declining nicotine use rates in the general population, 50% to 83% of people within the criminal legal system smoke, compared to 9% in the general population. This use is associated with a disproportionate burden of chronic disease and premature mortality which negatively impacts individuals, correctional health resources, and community health systems post-incarceration. This on-demand webinar provides background on risk factors that contribute to tobacco-related health disparities in the justice-involved population. The presenter then discusses strategies to overcome systemic barriers, and implement policies, procedures, and best practices to improve access to nicotine use treatment for the persons who are justice involved. The webinar closes by identifying realistic opportunities to develop partnerships with the criminal justice system as well as other community partners to assist this at-risk population.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe how nicotine use impacts people that are in the justice system
