Description
The use of evidence-based practices (EBPs) contributes to tobacco treatment success. However, many individuals do not pursue pharmacotherapy or counseling to support their quit attempts. Research shows that offering information about best practices, while also eliciting patients’ values, motivation, preferences, and concerns, can increase the uptake of EBPs. Shared decision making (SDM) is a collaborative communication model that supports these conversations and has the potential to increase uptake and adherence to recommended tobacco cessation treatments. This webinar will provide an overview of SDM, outline the steps for applying SDM to tobacco treatment, and offer practical tools to support implementation. Case-based examples will demonstrate the application of SDM in a variety of clinical and public health settings.
After this one-hour webinar, attendees will be able to:
- Define SDM and describe its role in tobacco treatment.
- Identify the key steps of the SDM process for tobacco cessation.
- Apply SDM strategies using practical tools and case-based examples to support the use of EBPs in diverse settings.
